25 years in the making

Sam Knott founded Lancashire Board & Paper Co. Ltd. in 1979. He had worked for many years in the cotton industry before moving into packaging in 1979. Already in his fifties he decided to form his own company, and started Lancashire Board & Paper from his home in Bacup.

Having raised the capital by buying and selling cardboard and paper, hence the company name Lancashire Board & Paper Co Ltd his plans were always to move into the conversion and manufacture of cardboard and corrugated packaging. Towards the end of 1980 he had raised enough capital to rent a 1,000 square foot unit in Todmorden, YORKSHIRE!!!

In 1980 his son Graham, the current MD, joined him at the company at which time the businesses meagre assets included one hand platen, a guillotine and a fork lift truck. Both had worked on the shop floor previously and with this experience the company’s main principle evolved, service.

By 1984 the company had filled four 1,000 square foot units and in 1985 bought Wood Mill, a 6,000 square foot former textile mill, at Eastwood, near Hebden Bridge. However in August 1994, and at full capacity, the company moved to its present location in Burnley, LANCASHIRE!!!

In 1991 Sam retired, leaving Graham to take the reigns, maintaining the company’s basic principle, and the "controlled expansion" continued. During 1997, Steve Slattery was recruited as General Manager and has since been made a Director of the company, as a vital part of the overall management structure.

As the market becomes ever more competitive the company has invested heavily in new plant and machinery. In August 2000 the company took delivery of a brand new Tecasa Starprint casemaker, a single investment of nearly £500,000.00 followed in September 2003 by a brand new Bobst Vision automatic die-cutter.

In January 2005 Steve guided the company towards ISO9001 Quality Management accreditation, offering further proof of the company’s commitment to its customers. It is this type of commitment, backed up by a dedicated and committed management team that has kept the company competitive whilst still providing the quality and service that customers have come to expect. Versatility and efficiency has allowed the company to expand into new markets, and it now offers the most comprehensive range of corrugated AND solid board packaging products in the North West of England, delivered to customers by it’s own fleet of vehicles.
